Beginning of formal Schooling represents a radical change for kids
Your LITTLE Toddler is ready to face the challenges of formal schooling now. First grade represents a radical change. Spending over thirty hours a week away from home is a novel experience in itself. Even academics and separate teachers for art, music and physical education are added to the picture. Little scholar must assume a degree of responsibility for their behavior, possessions, movement about the school building and completion of tasks that until now rested more upon the shoulders of their teachers and parents.
Beginning of Schooling age extends from 6 years to the time an individual becomes sexually mature. While adjusting to the new demands and expectations of First grade, most children are in a state of disequilibrium, they are emotionally disturbed and as a result difficult to work with. Entrance into first grade is a milestone in every child’s life; therefore it is responsible for many of the changes that take place in attitudes, values and behavior.
Many Parents call it a troublesome age– the time when children are no longer willing to do what they are told to do and when they are more influenced by their peers than by their parents and other family members. Older children, especially boys are careless and irresponsible about their clothes and other material possessions, parents define it as sloppy age. Often their rooms are full of clutter. It is also a quarrelsome age– it’s a time when fights are common between siblings. They make it emotional and not so pleasant for the complete family.
Educators define it as Elementary school age. It is the time when the child is expected to acquire the rudiments of knowledge that are considered essential for successful adjustment to adult life. It is this age when child is expected to learn certain essential skills, both the curricular and extracurricular. It is regarded as critical period in the achievement drive. It is a time when children form the habit of being achievers, under achievers or over achievers. Once habit of working below, above or up to one’s capacity tend to persist into adulthood. This develops in all areas of the child’s life not only academics.
Psychologist calls it a Gang age – The time when children’s major concern is acceptance by their age mates and membership in the gang, especially g gang with prestige in the eyes of their age-mates. Because of this children are ready to follow group approved standards in terms of appearance, speech and behavior. So it also said as age of Conformity. For instance your child might ape the dress and mannerism of older children and subscribe to the group-code, even when it runs against family or school’s rules.
Some Scholars are better equipped to cope with this new responsibility than others. You see, organizational, academic and social skills – all of which result from years of learning and playing according to inborn sensory preferences – differ greatly among six and seven years olds. Kids, who have been visually oriented since birth, e.g. usually learn beginning reading and writing skills with ease. Yet these kids conversational skills may not approach those of naturally attuned to auditory, and may also lack the superior co-ordination of a child who favors touch and movement.
Whatever a child’s experience maybe in school, his time at home is an important aspect of the “Big Picture”. For some, home provides relief from a stressful academic pace or level of socialization that is at once fascinating and overwhelming. For others, it may be a place that’s too quiet or offers limited opportunities to burn off energy. Making your child’s at home learning a low-pressure, made to order, fun experience while allowing plenty of unstructured time, will enable him to be most receptive to your skill- enhancement efforts and help you both get the greatest benefit from the time you spend together.
